Canada will join the Apostille convention on January 11th 2024. As of then, authenticated documents can be legalized with a standard certificate called an apostille. Currently, Canadian public documents need a two-step authentication to be accepted in countries where the Apostille convention is already in effect. Documents need to be authenticated both at Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and the consular office of the destination country. The fact that Canada joins the Apostille convention will simplify the acceptance of Canadian public documents in the more than 120 countries that have signed the convention.
