A while back on our blog, we told you about what the ETIAS authorization was all about and what its purpose was. In this article, we explore the recent update that this system has undergone: changes in the application processes, updated requirements, and how it will affect travelers planning to visit Europe in the future

    What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is a new travel requirement that will be implemented for citizens of visa-exempt countries who wish to travel to Schengen countries. This is being introduced to strengthen security at the EU’s external borders, as well as to improve risk management and the detection of potential security threats. Although there is a belief circulating that this process is a visa, we must clarify that it is a travel authorization. It is important to note that even if the ETIAS authorization has been approved, border authorities will need to verify that this information is accurate and that the passenger meets the entry requirements of the country.

What changes are there in its process?

Once again, there have been some updates to ETIAS that you should be aware of:

    • The European Council initially announced that this permit would be operational by the end of 2022, later it was delayed to May 2023, and then it was moved to 2024. Now, the European Commission has announced a new forecast that it would be ready for the fall of 2024 and will be operational in May 2025
    • The council adopted the Regulation for the Entry/Exit System (EES) in November 2027. The EES will electronically record the entry and exit of third-country nationals and calculate the duration of their stay. This will consequently replace the obligation to stamp the passports of third-country nationals, which is applicable to all member states.

How can I apply for the ETIAS authorization?

It is expected that in 2025, the ETIAS visa will be mandatory for more than 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S.). This visa will be required regardless of whether it has been visited previously.

When the program is up and running, those who need it have to fill out a form online and pay a fee of 7 euros (it will be free for applicants over 70 years old). It is believed that the approval of this type of visa will be almost immediate, except in cases where more information is required.

Once this application is approved, it will be valid for three years.
