On August 7, 2025, the Chinese government officially amended the Regulations on the Administration of the Entry and Exit of Foreigners.
A key outcome of this update is the creation of the K visa, a new category that will take effect on October 1, 2025, targeting foreign young professionals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

This new visa type is part of China’s broader effort to attract global innovation talent and make entry procedures more flexible for qualified individuals.

What Is the K Visa in China?

Before this reform, China offered 12 types of ordinary visas, including:

    • Z visa (for work)

    • M visa (for business)

    • L visa (for tourism)

    • R visa (for high-level talent)

The K visa now joins this list as a special visa for young science and technology talent.
Compared to the other categories, K visa holders will benefit from greater flexibility in terms of multiple entries, visa validity, and length of stay.

Importantly, no sponsoring or inviting entity in China will be required, simplifying the process for qualified applicants.

Who Can Apply for the K Visa?

The K visa targets “young science and technology talent”, specifically:

    • Graduates in STEM fields from recognized universities or research institutions worldwide, with at least a bachelor’s degree.

    • Young professionals working in education, research, or technology at such institutions.

The Chinese authorities are expected to publish more detailed eligibility criteria, including specific requirements on age, academic background, and professional experience.

What Activities Are Allowed with a K Visa?

Holders of the China K visa may participate in:

    • Academic and cultural exchanges

    • Scientific and technological collaboration

    • Entrepreneurship and business-related activities

At this stage, there is no official indication that the K visa permits direct employment in China.
